Summer sampler 2016 – I’ve arrived! (Part 1)

thisisit…. I have officially started my first quilt-a-long (QAL) Summersampler 2016 which is made up of 20 blocks designed by freshly pieced and 9 other amazing designers. I am so excited that I want to tell everyone what I am doing and how great it is going to be.  When I actually think about it this is my 2nd QAL (I’ve just remembered) I am also doing a monthly one, which is great, but this one is a weekly (on a monday) one.

So I have officially started my first weekly QAL.  I pondered on whether this would be too much pressure for me, as I also have other quilts to work on and finish, I have a family, full time job and lots of family commitments.  How will I make time??

I finally decided to do it, bought the pattern and checked my fabric stash as I knew I was going to use my Dashwood bloom fabric, which I have been saving for a special project.  I needed more fabric and this panicked me as I was worried I would make a mistake in fabric choices and the quilt wouldn’t look so go.

Time was running out, so I went to my local fabric shop and picked up a couple of fat quarters.  I was impressed the colours worked and my block was ready to go

I was conscious that I had a baby quilt to bind this week and I need to gift it and my Road’s Residents Association had an AGM which  needed to attend.  Tuesday was my free, evening, but Monday was the day the first block was going to be published, how would I manage, to wait a whole day before sewing?  Problem solved on Monday night I decided to cut the pieces I needed, so that Tuesday straight from work I could SEW.

THIS WAS A PLAN.  Tuesday I sewed the block, ignored my children most of the night, bought a microwave curry meal (as my husband was out) and asked my daughter to prepare it for me.  I decided that she could put it in the oven as this would give me more sewing time.  The microwave would cook it too quickly and I needed to finish,  The HST (half square triangles) proved that I was challenged with angles, but after taking some of these apart I managed to complete the block.

I loved it, the colours, my points and seams all looked good and now I’m ready for next Monday and block 2.  I feel that I have now arrived as I am part of a FB and IG group all doing the same thing and loving quilting. A breathe of fresh air….. Thisisit
